For plenty of people, Hanson will always be the fresh-faced kids who sang the goofy pop hit “MMMBop” in 1997. If you’ve never heard any Hanson songs aside from that catchy (albeit fairly nonsensical) chart-topper, you might be surprised at the group’s talent and range. “MMMBop” was released when the Hanson brothers (Isaac, Taylor and Zac) were all under 18, and it reflected a kind of childish exuberance. But even at those young ages, the Hansons were clearly accomplished pop songwriters, and they’ve honed those skills in the years since.

The trio had more hits, including “Where’s the Love,” “This Time Around” and “If Only,” but since 2003 the group has released its albums independently, allowing the Hanson brothers the chance to explore creative impulses. Hanson’s later music is still catchy and energetic, but also deeply engaged with classic rock and soul, showcasing the band members’ musical chops. In the tour announcement, Zac Hanson describes the current Wintry Mix tour as “a collision of worlds with Christmas classics and a taste of brand new music,” the perfect way to show off Hanson’s enduring musical proficiency and depth.
