Here’s the thing about pop punk—it has somehow skipped the 20-year waiting period to enjoy its renaissance as both a nostalgic genre that brings people back to their younger days and as a respectable style of music, as is evidenced by the way audience members still rock out to the screaming of emotional lyrics at concerts and festivals throughout the world.
The Story So Far would be considered the equivalent to a second wave band in the pop punk arena—second pop punk?—as the genre had already seemed peaked with bands like New Found Glory, a band which has a song that Story named themselves after.
TSSF formed in 2007 and has been a mainstay on the pop punk scene since. Their latest album, Proper Dose, was released in 2018 and is full of tracks that hit the sweet spot for fans. The title track has those pounding drums, a distinct little guitar riff and, most importantly, a chorus that checks off the boxes of screamable and highly emotional—“All this time I wanna give you back / I feel opaque and absentee / Am I just going through the motions / Or is this how I’ll be?”—lyrics. One can expect Story to continue their story on the pop punk scene for as long as they want to write it.
