Certain personalities ooze the environment they were raised in. Their neighborhood is as integral to their presentation as their thoughts and ideas. Such is the case with Joey Diaz, the comedian nicknamed “Coco,” who was born in Havana, Cuba, but spent his formative years in North Bergen, N.J. It is the Jersey attitude that penetrates his words and how he expresses those words.

Diaz has the swagger of a street fighter, and coming from the quick-witted streets of the Northeast, there is no doubt he both gave and took his share of verbal barrages to and from neighborhood characters. These are the types of people who find their way into his act, such as the Catholic charity guy Diaz refuses to give $3 to because he didn’t earn it.

Here’s Diaz’s motivational speech to the charity worker, “You gotta mug a mother****…. Hide behind the Redbox. You know what I’m saying? Somebody comes out, you hit him with one of those videos and you take his **** wallet.”

He is a captivating speaker, which is, no doubt, why his podcast, The Church of What’s Happening Now, is so popular, and why he’s such a valued guest on The Joe Rogan Experience. Coco sure can tell some stories, from New Jersey and beyond.
