The lineup of legendary classic rock band the Doobie Brothers has shifted numerous times over the group’s 50-year history, but the three musicians who have been the most constant presences in the Doobies’ soulful, harmony-filled Southern rock sound (Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and John McFee) will be together for the band’s first-ever Las Vegas residency. Singer/keyboardist Michael McDonald is set to rejoin the band for its upcoming 50th-anniversary tour, and he’s been known to pop in for guest appearances even if he’s not officially on the bill.

Not only is it the Doobies’ 50th anniversary, but the band is also set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in May after nearly 25 years of eligibility. That’s a testament to the lasting impact of the Doobies’ music, including hits like “Listen to the Music,” “Jesus Is Just Alright,” “China Grove,” “Black Water” and “What a Fool Believes,” all still staples of classic-rock radio.

“Earning the recognition of our peers is a great honor that I don’t take lightly, but it’s our fans who kept us believing that we could get in,” Johnston said in a statement about the recent Hall of Fame induction.

It’s the best anniversary present a band could hope for.
