It’s no surprise that there are so many bars in Las Vegas that many of them cater to very specific tastes—places that match people’s moods and party vibes. Such is the case with The Tangier, the new whiskey bar at Sahara Las Vegas.

“The goal ... is if someone lands here in Vegas and says, ‘Hey let’s go find a good whiskey bar?’ that we would pop up on Google,” says Nate Hedlund, director of beverage for Sahara Las Vegas. “This is where you come if you want whiskey—The Tangier—we’re all brown spirits.”

More than 200 different brown spirits, to be exact. “With more in storage,” Hedlund says. “You will find whiskies, bourbons here you won’t find anywhere on the Strip.” The cozy bar and lounge right off the check-in lobby is posh but inviting, and there’s not only a huge brown spirits selection, there are some pretty darn tasty specialty cocktails that use those brown spirits.

There’s the Caravan of One, a citrusy cocktail with floral notes that comes in a really cool reflective cup. It’s a mix of Glenmorangie 10-year scotch whiskey, grapefruit juice, St-Germain, Sandeman sherry and grapefruit bitters. Or The Chosen One, Tangier’s version of a punch. With a slight spice and flavors like banana, passion fruit and pineapple, this tiki-type cocktail is made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Ambros banana whiskey, Funkin passion fruit purée, Monin pineapple chipotle syrup and lemon juice.

In honor of the Sahara’s owner, Alex Meruelo, The Self-Made Man is Tangier’s version of an Old-Fashioned but made with Gran Centenario añejo tequila, Amaro Lucano, Cocktail & Sons spiced demerara and orange bitters and a really cool ice sphere with a flower frozen inside. The aged tequila gives the cocktail the flavors of vanilla and caramel.

For a real unique twist on an Old-Fashioned, go with the Tito’s Barrel-Aged Old-Fashioned. Yup, Hedlund has barrel-aged Tito’s vodka for more than 120 days, on property, in special barrels, and the result is a vodka that tastes like a whiskey! “The charred barrels release the sugars in the wood, giving the vodka those caramel and vanilla flavors that you get in whiskey,” Hedlund says.
