If you’re a horse-racing fan, then you’ll be happy to know there are plenty of places in Las Vegas to catch all the action of the Kentucky Derby on May 1 (pretty much every sports book and bar out there). Even better is if you can get mint julep to go along with that action on Derby Day. Here are a few to check out, and, if you’re at home for your watch party, a twist to try from Las Vegas master mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim. 

At Eureka (520 E. Fremont St., 702.570.3660), enjoy a Buffalo Trace mint julep cocktail on May 1 for only $7! Bargain!

Down Las Vegas Boulevard, PT’s Wings & Sports and View Lounge at The STRAT (800.998.6937) offers several specials to commemorate the day: a traditional mint julep for $12, bourbon chocolate walnut pie for $9, and a Woodford bourbon cider martini for $16. And with screens all over the pub, you won’t miss a minute of the race.

Golden Circle Sportsbook & Bar (Treasure Island, 702.894.7111) offers fans specials on April 30 and May 1 like $10 mint juleps, $10 shots, $8 drafts, $10 bottles, and 4 for $30 beer buckets of Angry Orchard Crisp Apple hard cider.

If you’ve been to PT’s Gold (702.899.4330, 2890 Bicentennial Pkwy.), you may have been collecting raffle tickets for certain wins. That continues through April 30, and on May 1, winners will be pulled for a 55-inch TV, a VGK jersey and $100 cash.

For those who stay home, try making cocktail wizard Abou-Ganim’s apricot julep, created with Town Branch Kentucky straight bourbon. “The beauty of the mint julep is its simplicity,” said Abou-Ganim in a news release. It offers a timeless template—a blank canvas, as it were.

“The mint julep beckons the artistry of bartenders to give it their own interpretations, while not straying too far from its cherished roots,” Abou-Ganim said. The cocktail wizard was one of 13 noted mixologists nationwide who created variations on the julep for Town Branch Kentucky straight bourbon. 

Here are the ingredients for Abou-Ganim’s apricot julep:

1.5 ounces of Town Branch Kentucky straight bourbon

5 ounces of Marie Brizard Apry liqueur

1 ounce of simple syrup

10-12 fresh spearmint leaves

3 slices fresh apricot.

Served with crushed ice, of course!
