The Las Vegas Strip’s longest-running show, Legends in Concert, continues to prove why it’s one of the must-see shows in town: It’s always evolving, rotating its lineup of celebrity impersonators so that you are practically guaranteed to never see the same show twice.
Over the years that I’ve seen Legends, the list of entertainers is almost too great to remember. Just off the top of my head: Celine Dion, Steven Tyler, Barry White, Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Prince, Lady Gaga, Aretha Franklin, Sting, Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Marley and Bruno Mars have been brought to sparkling life on the Legends stage, always backed by incredible bands that helped replicate the signature sounds that give you goosebumps.
And in 2019, the show got even better, thanks to the inclusion of a host to tie all the acts together: Frank Marino, himself one of the longest-performing entertainers on the Strip, who not only provides a hilarious monologue to open each show, but changes his wardrobe between each act, so expect plenty of outrageous get-ups. If you never got a chance to see Marino in his successful drag shows An Evening at La Cage or Divas Las Vegas, now’s your chance to see the talents that made him a Vegas legend in his own right.
And for a limited time, Legends has adopted a theme: “Direct From London,” in which all the tribute acts impersonate U.K. performers. Until Nov. 21, you’ll get to see:
Fernando Castro as Freddie Mercury, strutting his stuff as he makes his way through Queen classics like “We Will Rock You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”;
Michael Knight as George Michael, replicating the icon’s sexiness and signature moves as he performs hits from both his Wham! and solo career, including “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” and “Faith”;
Even Stephen as Elton John, becoming an incarnation of one of the biggest pop stars of all time. Expect renditions of “Crocodile Rock” and plenty of other Elton hits through the decades.
And if you’ve never been to a Legends show before, you’re in for a real treat: Not only do the impersonators look exactly like their counterparts, they actually sing like them. There’s absolutely no lip-synching here; when Castro hits those high notes on “Don’t Stop Me Now,” it’s the real thing. And the wardrobe team that helps put this show together is beyond criticism; the folks backstage have honed their talents over the show’s 38 years, and it really does feel like, from time to time, you’re seeing—and hearing the genuine article up there.
That level of talent extends to everyone else onstage, from the showgirls who strut their stuff at the beginning—a welcome sight, as the showgirl is a Vegas icon—to the dancers who back up the performers and provide some “half-time” entertainment with a variety of dance moves and styles.
This is fun for the entire family. Even if your children may not know who Elvis Presley was, this show might want to make them find out.
