There was a time when lavish musicals were part of the Las Vegas experience, when shows were built around movement. Standards for costume, stage design and sound were high, but performers had to know how to dance. As interest in the classic era of showgirl headdresses and sets resembling the Titanic sank, newer concepts in choreography began to float to the top. Jabbawockeez saw the possibilities, envisioned the future for dance shows on the Strip, and proved to be preeminent progressive body rockers both on the Strip and around the world. Along the way, they won humble-bragging rights to having created their own demographic, with fans coming to Vegas just for them.
Jabbawockeez’s all-ages appeal led from a long-term engagement at the Luxor to the hotel-casino where David Copperfield headlines. Timeless, the troupe’s current show at MGM Grand, honors the legacy of moves that have evolved from street to stage while appealing to younger appetites. Instantly recognizable thanks to trademark blank-faced masks, Jabbawockeez express themselves with Swiss-watch precision and draw inspiration from a continuum of influences that includes martial arts, film franchises (The Matrix, Star Wars), cutting-edge special effects and anime. The results of their creativity are all their own, though, and illuminate the way to the future of live entertainment.
