Check off another box on your bucket list this week with a visit to Grand Canyon West, where you can find plenty of ways to experience the American Southwest and the majesty of the Grand Canyon.
You’ll find Grand Canyon West just a few hours south of Vegas, an easy morning’s drive. The attraction gives you a close-up view of the natural wonder and is especially striking when viewed from the vantage point of the Skywalk, a cantilevered glass horseshoe-shaped bridge that hangs out over the canyon. That’s an incredible view that just adds to the already amazing scenes that you’ll experience on the approach to the Skywalk. (You’ll need to wear special booties here, because since the bridge is made of glass, precautions have been taken to avoid potential scratches.)
Grand Canyon West includes several areas where you can learn about the Hualapai Tribe, including Guano Point, Hualapai Point and Eagle Point, where the Skywalk is located. At Eagle Point, visitors can explore a Native American village, and Guano Point offers 360-degree views and access to Highpoint Hike, where you can spot remnants of a historic tram used by miners. A shuttle runs between those points, so you can see it all. If you want to take in a desert sunset and sunrise, there are several lodging options, including cabins at Hualapai Point. For more adventures, take the opportunity to zipline 500 feet above a side canyon at Hualapai Point, or opt for a helicopter tour, which operates from the Eagle Point area. You can also choose to try whitewater rafting on the Colorado River or take it easy with a pontoon boat ride.
If you’re peckish during your time at Grand Canyon West, there are plenty of options for food (you can get meal tickets included with your entrance), and ordering fry bread as a side or as part of the item is recommended! Try the Hualapai taco, with a fry bread exterior, at Gwe Ma’jo restaurant at Hualapai Point. Yum, yum, yum!
