If you haven’t heard of Shark Week, you must clearly be living under a rock—or under the sea, rather. The annual Discovery Channel celebration of one of the ocean’s neatest inhabitants has a cult following, so much so that you can find special deals and activities all over the country, but the Shark Days program at Golden Nugget’s The Tank is one of the best.
Given its name, I’m sure you can assume The Tank features some sort of sea life feature, but what you’ll find is beyond your wildest dreams. This pool complex houses a centerpiece 200,000-gallon shark tank that you can swim right up to. Get an even closer look when you splash down a waterslide that shoots straight through the enclosure. Yes, you read that right, you can go through the swarm of sharks.
The Shark Days program makes this already über-cool experience all the more fun with special activities like shark feedings at 9:20 a.m. on July 24-26 and Q&A sessions with Golden Nugget’s extremely knowledgeable life science biologists on the same days at 10:30 a.m. With sand tiger sharks, nurse sharks, black tip sharks, zebra sharks and other critters like stingrays and a variety of jack fish, there’s plenty to ask about.
Snap a photo with the property’s mascot, Sharkey, on the pool deck before diving into the daily shark tank scavenger hunt or kicking back to sip on The Shark Attack, a refreshing concoction of Malibu coconut rum, Bacardi, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, grenadine and Sprite, all served in a souvenir cup, of course. Stress sharks and bookmarks will be available for the kids and shark-themed merchandise and sweets are available for purchase in the property’s various shops.
Golden Nugget will also be revealing the names of two new additions to its aquatic community this week. The public had the opportunity to vote on names for the new sharks via social media, and while the voting has closed for these new friends, more opportunities await as The Tank’s population grows.
