There are three aspects of Carlos Santana that are most recognizable to the public at large: his classic hits, his distinctive guitar playing, and his hats. It was a no-brainer for him to introduce the Santana Hat Collection after forays into designing ladies shoes, and the move makes it possible for fans to pay tribute to the legendary musician in a sartorial sense.
Emulating his guitar playing is another story, but paying homage to his music is as easy as stepping into the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay for An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live, his headlining show. It’s been nearly 13 years since Santana made the concert venue into a musical home where guests could made regular pilgrimages as he sculpted his set into a sonic biography.
Santana was well-known on the late-’60s concert circuit before playing Woodstock in front of hundreds of thousands of festivalgoers. The concert itself caught a band completely on fire during “Soul Sacrifice,” playing with abandon as cameras captured performances for a documentary film. It’s a vibe that Santana establishes at the onset of every House of Blues show, with songs such as “Jingo,” “Evil Ways” and “Black Magic Woman/ Gypsy Queen” transporting fans to a timeless era of peace, love and music.
