For some the Renaissance was an important era in history, the period between the Dark Ages and Age of Enlightenment, in which profound advancements in arts and culture were made. To others it’s a way of life, whether they follow fêtes year-round or spend months in advance preparing for the Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival, which returns to Sunset Park for its 31st annual event.

A pirate festival produced by Clark County staff members was reimagined into “Ren Fair” for the original two-day festival. What started out with two reenactment “guilds” and a handful of vendors is now a three-day travel back in time with overnight camping, more than 30 guilds and 100 vendors, full-contact jousting and nearly 300 theatrical and musical performances.

The 50,000-plus patrons who attended the 30th anniversary participated in a vision carefully cultivated during the past three decades. The schedule is smooth and the layout of the 31-acre realm optimized for enjoyment, creating a nine-village cultural oasis for both locals and fair followers. It’s total immersion in the lifestyles of knights, ladies of the court and other assorted townsfolk who play antique instruments, sell wares and make sure roasted turkey legs are in abundance.
