Are you a lover of tequila or mezcal? Do you want to become a lover of tequila or mezcal? Then we implore you to get over to the new Lucky Day Mezcal & Tequila House in the famed Fremont Street East district downtown—and the man you’re going to want to see is bar manager Asa Eubanks.

Growing up in a small town in Texas, Eubanks moved to Las Vegas when he was 19 years old and entered the food and beverage industry on the Strip, starting out as a busser for PBR Rock Bar & Grill at Miracle Mile Shops. He slowly worked his way up the ladder, from busser, food runner and server to barback and bartender, eventually moving into his first management position at now-shuttered hot spot Casa Del Matador in Downtown Summerlin, known for its huge tequila selection.

“When I was working at Matador, it was my first week managing, and this guy asked about a tequila that I didn’t know, and he made fun of me for not knowing. I vowed right then that never again am I ever going to be stumped about tequila,” Eubanks says. “I took that moment and turned it around to learn.”

Today, after years of studying everything about the two spirits, Eubanks would call himself a tequila and mezcal expert; in fact, one of his favorite parts of the job is teaching and talking with guests about the spirits.

And Lucky Day has become the hot spot to experience the magic of tequila and mezcal. “Lucky Day is like walking into a secret, you can’t really judge it from the outside,” Eubanks says. “But when you walk into this place, you feel like you’re walking into Mexico—like a secret lounge. Everything about this place is unique, even our cocktails.” And those cocktails? Thank Eubanks—he created all the recipes on the menu. “It will always be tequila and mezcal for me, making the drinks, creating the flavors, being creative.”

Chica Blanca

Lucky Day offers more than 200 different brands of tequilas and mezcals, including gems like G4 reposado tequila, Dos Artes extra añejo tequila, Rey Campero mezcal and Mezcales de Leyenda. While guests are encouraged to try one of the many flights offered to get a variety of taste experiences, the hot spot’s specialty cocktail list is a great way to experience the spirits, too. One of Eubanks’ faves is the floral-tasting Chica Blanca, a blend of tequila, crème de violette, elderflower liqueur, egg whites, fresh-squeezed lemon juice and lavender syrup.
