The one-time host of the famed It’s Showtime at the Apollo and an Original King of Comedy, Steve Harvey has become a one-man brand. The comedian and actor currently hosts the nationally syndicated radio program, The Steve Harvey Morning Show, he’s a best-selling author and host of both the Steve Harvey talk show and Family Feud. This week, Harvey pulls hosting duties again for The Ford Neighborhood Awards at MGM Grand on August 10. Various events will take place around town, such as an outdoor concert and charity golf tournament, in conjunction with the awards show (see page 64 for details). The dapper don took a few minutes to answer some questions for Las Vegas Magazine.
Q: What’s the importance of the Ford Neighborhood Awards?
A: The importance of the Ford Neighborhood Awards is the people and the community. Eleven years ago when we began this show, our goal was to shine a light on the everyday business owner, those special people who never get the recognition and praise they deserve. What we do is bring in known celebrities as the presenters and allow them to celebrate those in the community who have supported them throughout the years. It’s an amazing experience.
Q: What are some of your favorite awards that you give out?
A: All of the awards that we give out are great. However, Best Barbecue and Best Community Leader are a few of my favorites. … See, I love barbecue and have been to many of the best restaurants throughout this country. The Best Community Leader award recognizes the change makers within our communities; these are the individuals that work tirelessly to redefine their community. Ford is donating $30,000 to the winner of the Best Community Leader Award.
Q: What does this year’s awards show have in store?
A: Charlie Wilson, Chaka Khan, Frankie Beverly and Maze, KEM, Jaheim, Fantasia, Mary Mary and TGT: Tank, Ginuwine and Tyrese (will be appearing).
Q: What do you say to those rumors that you’re the next male Oprah?
A: It’s a humbling gesture; however, there will only be one Oprah. I’m grateful to God for my opportunity to be the best me in this space (that) I can right now.
