It’s hard to gauge what’s more fun at The Cabinet of Curiosities: The cocktails or exploring the space. For the safest bet, combine both, as this unique destination will test your brain while pleasing your taste buds at the same time.
The decor here is dark and gothic, with a mashup of Victorian and bohemian furnishings. On your right upon entering, you’ll find curio cabinets filled with objects that will have you scratching your head, “What exactly is this thing?” But scan a QR code and you’ll be taken to a site that lets you input each item’s four-digit number. You’ll spend quite a bit of time discovering information (not necessarily factual, mind you) on pieces like the Copper Watering Can. (We won’t spoil it, but it involves something grisly.)
Doing this with a cocktail in your other hand is highly encouraged here. Highlights during happy hour include the Nola, a gin fizz with dry gin, cucumber, mint, lemon juice and sparkling water; the Apple Smash, a whiskey cider made with Canadian whiskey, apple purée, caramel syrup, lemon juice and sparkling water; Oh Elle’s Bells, a Spanish fall sangria made with red wine, brandy, cinnamon, fruit infusions and sparkling water; and Latin Moon, a blueberry mojito made with light rum, blueberry purée, sweetened syrup, lime juice, mint and sparkling water.
Once you’ve explored to your heart’s content, head over to The Lock, the venue’s speakeasy with a door resembling an entrance to a bank vault. The phone rings, you pick it up and give the password. You’re then led to an antechamber where you’ll be faced with a series of riddles and puzzles, all of which you must solve to gain entrance. Cocktails here are significantly different than the Cabinet, and you can also have the bartender mix you a drink based on your personality—likes, tastes, etc. It’s tremendously fun.
For a change of pace, definitely check out the Cabinet’s mixology classes, in which you are trained in the art of cocktail-making and get to create your own unique concoction in the process. This week, the theme is “Holiday Delights: Festive Spirits for Every Season” from Nov. 28-Dec. 1.
