“You definitely have to get a fishbowl,” says lead bartender Kayla Hale. “I think those are really fun if you have a good, big group of people that are all interested in drinking the same thing. I think it’s really fun for everyone to … (drink) together or fight to see who can finish it.”

Exceptionally fitting for the hot summer months, this hot spot serves Dole Whips … with booze! Cool off with a Mambo No. 5, a refreshing pineapple-based Dole Whip with Bacardi mango chili, Tajín and strawberry. It’s like everything you love from a roadside fruit stand turned into a creamy, frozen treat. For something that’s all sweet, try the Islands in the Stream, made with the same yummy base but flavored with Stoli Vanil vodka, orange juice and cherry.

Everyone knows the trouble that comes with a blue drink, and at Smelly Cat you’ll find it in the form of the Smells Like Teen Spirit, which is made from—you guessed it—all the liquors. This concoction of vodka, gin, rum, tequila, blue Curaçao and sweet and sour is all the liquid courage you’ll need to get onstage and sing your heart out. For those who’d like to remember the night, consider a delicious Dancing Queen, simply made with vodka, cherry, lime and soda, or the Shake It Off, which balances floral lavender syrup and bitey ginger beer.

The party doesn’t stop at cocktails and really big cocktails. Infuse some extra excitement into your visit with signature shots like the Wrecking Ball, a combination of Captain Morgan rum, Malibu rum, blue Curacao, melon, sweet and sour and pineapple, all garnished with a Nerds rim. Or have a spiced-up version of your typical tequila shot with the Highway to Hell, made with smoky mezcal, spicy agave, lime and blackberry.

Once drinks are settled, add yourself to the karaoke queue and have the time of your life, but heed Hale’s advice when it comes to choosing the perfect melody for the mood: “Choose something that it’s not difficult to sing, something that gets the crowd interested in hanging out and being in a karaoke bar. Choose something that makes them want to get involved and sing with you.”

Crowd support makes all the difference when you’re taking the stage, because let’s face it, not everyone is talented in the singing department. But that doesn’t matter when you’re singing with a group of people who are also singing kind of, sort of on key. Consider a country crowd-pleaser like “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band or and alt-rock classic like 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up.”

That’s not to say Smelly Cat doesn’t have the perfect solution for the wallflowers of the group. Head upstairs to the catwalk to get an overhead view of the room. It’s perfect for people-watching and singing along.

• The fries are to die for. Hale recommends the satisfying Buffalo chicken fries, topped with fried chicken, Buffalo sauce, blue cheese crumbles, diced celery, scallions and ranch drizzle.

• Be the frontman of your own band on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays when live instrumentalists take the stage to play backing tracks for aspiring singers starting at 9:30 p.m.
