It can be difficult for a band to effectively cross over from the Christian market to the mainstream, but the members of Switchfoot have made it look easy, scoring major pop hits while retaining their positive, faith-affirming message. Since first reaching a wider audience with hit singles “Meant to Live,” “Dare You to Move” and “Stars” in the early ’00s, the California-based band has managed to retain a strong following among Christian fans (and rack up multiple honors from the Christian-focused Dove Awards) while embracing wider popularity, attracting audiences of all types without limiting the appeal of their music.

It helps that Switchfoot’s brand of alternative rock is accessible and upbeat, at home in inspirational movies like A Walk to Remember, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Unbroken: Path to Redemption while also firmly based in emotional personal expression from frontman Jon Foreman. “This album is an attempt to sing that hope into life. To bring a group of diverse songs under one common banner,” Foreman said in the announcement for the band’s latest album, Native Tongue, which was released last month. That’s the kind of uplifting vibe and message that can speak to anyone, regardless of faith.
