Cast aside all your notions on what a supermarket is before you decide to go shopping at Omega Mart. Or don’t. Your choice. But you may just find a lot more than you bargained for.
This enormous attraction by art collective Meow Wolf inside AREA15 starts with a basic supermarket with cartons of milk and nice steaks, but the more you look, the more things seem a little off. If you look closely enough, you’ll discover hidden entrances behind the freezers and coolers, leading to the enormous, otherworldly “cyber-spiritual factory” and corporate headquarters of Dramcorp, the corporation behind Omega Mart.
Hundreds of mind-twisting art installations are packed into multiple levels, with neon-lit trees stretching their weird limbs over the concrete floor; a video projection show that ranges over a two-story, box canyon-like space; and door after door of rooms waiting to yield clues. Yes, if you feel like stretching your sleuthing muscles, gather information throughout the factory and the corporate headquarters and figure out just why, how and where the workers have gone.
If the adults in your party feel the need for libations, the neon-washed Datamosh, a speakeasy at one end of the supermarket, serves up tasty drinks. And through Aug. 8, catch Phenomenomaly, a show with puppets, wild characters and talented performers ranging throughout the exhibition.
