Memorial Day Weekend in Las Vegas is a bustling time of year, with crowds packing the Strip to enjoy a variety of seasonal events like pool parties and nightclub events (see p. 54-55 for both). But there are plenty of ways to celebrate the May 25 holiday throughout the rest of the week as well.
For a truly memorable experience (either by yourself, with family or with a large group), it doesn’t get better than Omega Mart, an art-fueled adventure at AREA15 courtesy of Meow Wolf. You begin in what can only be described as a grocery store from a David Lynch movie, one where everything is just a little bit … different. It’s all for sale, so you could easily spend hours here. But as you’ll discover when you venture just a bit beyond the appropriate boundaries, there’s a whole other world behind this façade, and it presents a mystery you must solve. And when you’re done, there’s a super-cool speakeasy with themed cocktails.
Speaking of whole other worlds, get ready for seven incredibly unique experiences for your senses at Infinity Museum at Boulevard Mall. The seven installations here let you experience re-creations of a wormhole, the vastness of the universe and the northern lights, as well as the world’s largest walk-in kaleidoscope, a mirror maze and perfectly placed spheres that seem to extend in every direction.
One of the Strip’s longest-running shows is also one of its most enticing. Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease at Luxor, now in its 26th year, features some of the most beautiful, athletic women on the planet in a series of numbers featuring a wide variety of dance styles. It is, indeed, sexy, but it’s also got some hilarious moments. Best of all, creator Anita Mann is constantly updating the show, making repeat visits mandatory.
Speaking of dance styles and show updates, Jabbawockeez at MGM Grand has an all-new show called FREQNCY, and even if you’ve seen the mask-wearing troupe tearing up the stage multiple times, this version will show you a side of the dance masters you’ve never seen before.
Down the Strip a bit at Luxor, an incredible exhibit awaits for the whole family, one that re-creates the most famous archaeological dig in history, Discovering King Tut’s Tomb—The Experience. You’ll be guided through rooms with historical tidbits, artifacts that show you how King Tut lived (despite his numerous physical ailments) and the spectacular nested coffins.
How about a memorable meal? Head straight to Benihana at Westgate Las Vegas, a Vegas institution that’s been entertaining families for more than 50 years, with skilled chefs whipping up your meal in front of you, serving up everything from New York strip steak and mushrooms (by far the most popular item) to the Benihana Trio of filet mignon, chicken breast and colossal shrimp. The two weeks of intensive training shows in every chef here; they’re quick with jokes as they deftly grill and move items around, never missing a beat.
